Al was the devoted husband of Karen (Samson) McDonald for 44 years. Together, they built a life filled with love, laughter, and cherished memories.
Born in Detroit, Michigan, Al was the son of the late James and Winifred (Emens) McDonald. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his siblings, Elizabeth "Betsy" McDonald and James "Jim" McDonald.
Raised in Michigan, Al attended Redford Union High School, where he played football before continuing his athletic career at Western Michigan University. He was known for his strong work ethic, positive attitude, and willingness to tackle any challenge. Whether learning a new skill or solving a complex problem, Al enjoyed working with his hands and took pride in finding solutions.
A faithful member of his church, Al served as an usher, greeting others with a warm smile and a welcoming spirit. He also had a gift for storytelling and loved sharing memories from his past. Whether recounting family adventures, childhood experiences, or funny moments from years gone by, his stories brought laughter, wisdom, and connection to those around him. In his free time, Al enjoyed reading, working on cars, watching sports (especially college football) and, above all, spending time with his family.

He found his greatest joy in the moments shared with those he loved.
In addition to his beloved wife, Karen, Al is survived by his children: James (Anne) McDonald; Melissa (McDonald) Sawyer (Michael Stevens); Michelle (Harry) Stroup; Lisa (Chad) Keener; and Dean Hall. He was a proud grandfather to Emily (Clay) Shelton, Elizabeth Sawyer,  Annie Sawyer, Grady McDonald, Gus McDonald, Austin Stroup, Alison (James) Fisher, Ava Stroup, Brendan Keener, Ryan Keener, Landon Keener, and Gavin Hall. He was also blessed with five great grandchildren: Kennedy Shelton and James, Aleyda, Aria and Wesley Fisher.

Al will be remembered for his kindness, determination, sense of humor, unwavering faith, and deep love for his family. His welcoming nature, willingness to serve others, and the stories he so loved to tell will remain treasured memories for all who knew him. His legacy lives on in the lives of those who knew and loved him, and he will be deeply missed.
