Our beloved mother, Barbara Jean Lundberg, was born as Theresa Fretty on January 23, 1940, in Lake Charles, Louisiana, to her loving parents, Austin and Ida Fretty, as part of a large and caring family. At the age of six, with a spark of independence that would follow her throughout life, she chose to change her name to Barbara Jean, a name that fit the strong, warm, and spirited woman she became.
She was the daughter of a proud Louisiana lineage and grew up alongside her siblings Evelyn LaChapelle, Clement Fretty, Leonard Fretty, Mildred Snow, Al Thomas Fretty, O’Rena Andrews, and Austin Fretty. From an early age, she learned the value of faith, family, and perseverance.
A spiritual woman, Barbara Jean spent her life with the goal going home to heaven, drawing strength and comfort from her relationship with her savior. She was a proud Cajun through and through, carrying her heritage in her stories, her cooking, her humor, and the way she cared for others.
She married William A. Lundberg, and together they raised three children: Albert Lundberg, Sonja Meyers, and Jason Lundberg. Her children were molded in the same image as their mother - kind, loving, and with a great sense of humor. Though the marriage later ended, the family they created remained her greatest joy and source of pride. In her later years, she made her home in McKinney, Texas, with Sonja and Sonja’s husband, Jim Meyers, where she was surrounded by love, attention, and unwavering support from the Meyers family. The Meyers’s were deeply devoted to Barbara during her time with the family, especially near the end of her life.
She was “Grandma” to two grandchildren, Austin Meyers and Blake Meyers, who brought her laughter, purpose, and countless cherished memories. She adored animals and always seemed to have room in her heart for one more creature to love. She was well-known in the family for her sense of humor about everyday life—particularly her playful use of "ironic punishments" when her grandchildren and Alex weren’t behaving like proper people. This running joke, which she fully embraced and laughed about, served as a lighthearted reminder to everyone not to take life too seriously.
Barbara leaves behind her children, Albert, Sonja, and Jason; her grandchildren, Austin and Blake; and a host of extended family and friends who will miss her smile, her faith, and her unique, honest, and loving spirit. Alex Osborne, partner of Austin Meyers, Michele Walsh, wife to Jason Lundberg, and Jim Meyers husband to Sonja were equally important devoted figures in Barbara’s life and each will miss her as much as anyone. Though she has left this world, her legacy of love, resilience, and faith will live on in the hearts of all who were blessed to know her.
When she learned she was going on hospice, she began calling her loved ones to share the news, saying, 'I’m going home, and I’m going to see His face.' Oh, how she loved Jesus! On February 17, 2026, she passed away peacefully in her sleep, closing her eyes on this world and opening them in the presence of the Lord she so faithfully trusted.

Dear Sonia and family. Such a beautiful tribute written for your mom. She’s going to be missed but I know she is happy in heaven with all those who passed before her. What a wonderful welcome she got going home. Love to you all, Mona
