Randolph “Randy” Owen Starr
February 16, 1955 – March 28, 2026
Randolph “Randy” Owen Starr was born on February 16, 1955, in Astoria, Oregon, to Johnnie Starr and Joyce Brons Starr. Randy passed away peacefully at home, in his sleep, on March 28, 2026.
Randy attended Pacific University before relocating to Texas in 1984, a place he would proudly call home for the remainder of his life. On August 10, 1996, he married the love of his life, Joan Monday, in Forestburg, Texas. Their marriage was built on deep love, devotion, and shared joy.
Randy dedicated 28 years of service to the Denton County Sheriff’s Office, where he served honorably as a Sergeant and Peace Officer. Known for his integrity, fairness, and commitment to the community, Randy took great pride in his career. Alongside his law enforcement service, he spent 28 years working part-time as a basketball referee, a role he loved and excelled in.
An avid sports enthusiast, Randy enjoyed playing softball, golfing, and faithfully cheering for the Texas Longhorns football team. He had a passion for traveling and making memories along the way. However, nothing brought him greater joy than spending time with his family—especially watching his grandchildren and great-grandchildren participate in sports. Family was the center of Randy’s life, and his presence will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
Randy is survived by his beloved wife, Joan Starr of Sanger, Texas. His siblings include: Linda and Gary Gerdes of Washington; Janet and Doug Flohr of Washington; Doug and Irene Starr of Oregon; Gary Starr of Washington; and Mike Starr of Washington.
He is also survived by his children and stepchildren: Stephanie Starr of Victorville, California; Bridget Starr Barboa and son-in-law Jessie Barboa, with grandchildren Cooper and Logan Barboa of Winchester, California; William Covington and Samantha of Mabank, Texas, and step-grandchild Anaya Guy of Mabank, Texas; grandchildren Zachary and Sami Covington of Denton, Texas; Jordan and Phillip Mayon, great-grandson Cooper Mayon, and step-great granddaughter Allyssa Mayon of Mabank, Texas; Vanessa and Greg Miller with grandchildren Olivia and Ethan Miller of Fayetteville, Arkansas; Stephanie Love and Hugh Hennessey of Saint Jo, Texas; grandson Sean Love of Nocona, Texas; and great-grandchildren Peyton and Bo Love of Saint Jo, Texas.
Randy is also survived by his in-laws: Dolores and Crunchy Wimmer of Edmond, Oklahoma; Roy and Janie Monday of Muenster, Texas; and Shirley and Gregg Wilde of Liberty Hill, Texas; along with many beloved nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his mother-in-law, and his brother-in-law.
Randy’s legacy of service, love, and devotion to family will live on in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know him. He will be remembered always for his warmth, strength, and the steady joy he brought into the lives of others.

So sorry Joan to hear about Randy. I was approached by the Gainesville municipal golf pro and he told me of his passing. We were so much alike, or passion for sports, and golf. He was one heck of a player and I always enjoyed playing with him and riding in same cart. My wife and I want to extend our prayers to your whole family. I lost my sister the same day. God bless you always. Chris Watson and Mary.
