Lyle “Buddy” Burton Coffman III, born October 31, 1937, in Staunton, Virginia, passed away peacefully at his home in Allen, Texas on December 10, 2025. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather whose warmth, optimism, and genuine love of people left a lasting impression on everyone who knew him.
Lyle was preceded in death by his parents, Lyle B. Coffman Jr. and Viola (Hawks) Coffman; his sisters, Yvonne Gordon and Sue Bunch; his great-granddaughter, Brianna Mathis; his son-in-law, Nicky Reynolds; and his granddaughter’s husband, Mark Hansen.
He is survived by his loving wife of 47 years, Kathleen “Kathy” Coffman; their daughter Erica Terrell and her husband Chris; and Kathy’s son Shane Madden. He is also survived by his daughters from his first marriage: Debra “Debbie” Treadwell and her husband Ricky, Cindy Reynolds, and Christina Wilson and her husband Philip, all of Tennessee.
Lyle was a proud grandfather to Tanner and Rylynn (children of Erica), Nichole and Jeremy (children of Cindy), Amber and Rowdy (children of Deborah), Dakota (child of Christina), and Katie Heron (child of Shane), and a devoted great-grandfather to six great-grandchildren who brought him immense joy. He is further survived by his brother Richard Coffman and his wife Faye of Staunton, Virginia.
Lyle began his professional career in Virginia after earning engineering credits from the University of Virginia. Early on, his dedication and work ethic were recognized when, in 1956, he was named Apprentice of the Year, an honor awarded for his outstanding academic record and exceptional performance in the GE College-Level Apprentice Training Program. While engineering was his foundation, Lyle’s genuine love of people ultimately guided him into a successful career in sales and leadership.
His career took his family to Tennessee and then Illinois, where he worked in sales with ITT Telecommunications and later Rockwell International. It was during this time in Roselle, Illinois, that he met Kathy and began the next chapter of his life with her. In 1989, Lyle and Kathy moved to Plano, Texas, where he became Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing at Intecom. In 1991, he joined startup company DGI Technologies, Inc. as Chief Operating Officer. One of his proudest professional accomplishments came in 1995, when he was honored as Entrepreneur of the Year. He retired in 2012 after many years of dedication and success.
Lyle had a deep love for travel and adventure. His journeys took him around the world—from cruises through the Baltic and Mediterranean to the Far East, including cherished trips to Phuket—often shared with his closest friends. Family vacations were especially meaningful to him, whether spent by the water or shared on ski trips to Austria, the
Rockies, Michigan, Wisconsin, and Montana, now home to his daughter Erica and her family.
Golf was another lifelong passion. Lyle became a member of Canyon Creek Country Club in 1989, where he faithfully played every weekend with his golf group and proudly achieved his one and only hole-in-one. He also treasured golf and fishing trips to Costa Rica with his buddies.
In quieter moments, Lyle loved to read—always leaving his “thumbprint” on the pages while enjoying a favorite snack. He also loved to sing and became a regular karaoke star, delighting those around him with his enthusiasm and joy. True to his affectionate nature, he never met a woman who didn’t receive a kiss on the cheek.
Lyle will be remembered for his unwavering positivity, his deep love of people, and his remarkable ability to find good in everyone he met. He lived by the motto “Don’t Worry, Be Happy,” and he truly meant it—lighting up every room he entered.
A celebration of Lyle’s life will be held on February 5, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Andrew Episcopal Church, 6400 McKinney Ranch Parkway, McKinney, Texas.
The family would like to thank everyone for the love, prayers, and support shown during this time, and in Lyle’s memory, encourage all to carry forward his warmth, optimism, and love of people.
