January 24, 1937 -- March 17, 2025

George Joseph Martin, Age:88

George was born in Sanford, Maine, to Nova and Olida Martin on January 24, 1937. Shortly after, the family moved to Bridgeport, Connecticut. His love of baseball began by playing catch in the snow with Père. One day, while digging in the dump, he found a broken baseball statue, and this began his infatuation with collecting all things baseball. His children have baseball card sets and autographs he personally collected.

George and his parents moved to Texas in the hopes of a brighter future. He played baseball at Adamson High. One of the most influential people in George’s life was Coach Tom Chandler. George said of him, “He taught me a lot about life, not just baseball.” He hopped on the bus to Alpine with Coach, and his Sul Ross baseball career began. While playing with Herbert and Robert Biedermann, George met their sister and the love of his life, Marie. He also played for the Alpine Cowboys. While still in college, they were married. Mylinda was born, and shortly after graduating, they moved to San Angelo. There, the next additions to the family were born: Manessa and Marganna.

He left the dusty days and “football is king” West Texas for Dallas. He taught at Humphrey Lee Elementary, Crozier Tech, Roosevelt High, and Duncanville High. While coaching and teaching, he built many lasting relationships. Maury and Michael were born in Dallas. The family moved to Duncanville, where they have lived for over 52 years. Throughout his life, the importance of hard work was always apparent. George worked two or three jobs to ensure his children were afforded a college education. In retirement, he continued playing poker, collecting baseball memorabilia, and junking with Marie. George fulfilled a lifelong dream by attending the 2010 Rangers World Series with family.

He took every opportunity to watch Maury play baseball at Texas A&M and Michael at Louisiana Tech. George was also delighted to watch Michael coach a NJCAA Division III National Championship team. George always supported his grandchildren in all of their endeavors. He had the privilege of watching his first grandson, Tyson, play college baseball at Louisiana Tech. He also achieved one of his lifelong dreams through his grandson Carson by watching him pitch in the Major Leagues.

He is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Marie, and children: Mylinda, Manessa (husband, Jeff), Marganna, Maury (wife, Kelly), and Michael (wife, Toni). He is also survived by 14 grandchildren and spouses, 21 great-grandchildren and counting, and countless nieces and nephews.

A Rosary and Funeral Mass will be held at St. Elizabeth of Hungary Catholic Church at 4015 S Hampton Rd, Dallas, TX 75232 on Saturday, March 29, 2025.  Rosary will begin at 10:00 am, Mass will follow at 11:00am and the family will hold a gathering after mass.  Due to the Lenten season no flowers or plants can be accepted. In lieu of flowers, consider donating to Scottish Rite, Shriners or St. Jude in George Martin's memory.

My Mother was a very dear Friend of Marie Martin and my cousin Fred Rojo was coached by Mr George Martin at Crozier Tech. I just remembered his wonderful smile and warming acceptance when we visited their home. Last time I saw him, he couldn't resist showing me Marie's Cookies Jar collection's. We both laughed.

George was the best of neighbors. I was admiring your yard just this morning and remember praising George for the beautiful lawn and he said he didn't even start to work on it until he retired. "It was just a yard until then", he replied. He left us with such a beautiful, peaceful spot to remember him by. I pray for you, Marie, and your children for strength and eventually, Peace.
