Shafer, Howard E. “Guy”
Howard E. "Guy" Shafer, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed
away peacefully on March 8, 2024 at the age of 81. Born on October 15, 1942, in
Kingsville, Texas, he was the son of Clyde Shafer, Jr. and Bernita L. Walzel Shafer.
Guy's life was marked by both athletic prowess and professional dedication. During his
formative years, he distinguished himself as an athlete, proudly wearing the number 43 jersey
for the Berwick (Louisianna) High School Panthers football team. Guy was also a lifeguard at the
local public swimming pool. It was there that he crossed paths with the love of his life, Kathleen
C. Baker (Barrios), whom he later married on March 3, 1962, a union that lasted sixty-two years.
His professional journey spanned an impressive sixty-three years in the natural gas and oil
industry. Guy's career took him through various roles at esteemed organizations including
Baroid IDP, Humble Oil, Sooner Pipe and Supply, Service Truck Line of Texas, Drilling Tools,
Geosource, Paterson Rental Tools, Apache Oil, and CUDD Pressure Control. His commitment
and expertise left an indelible mark on the industry.
Beyond his professional endeavors, Guy was a man of diverse interests and passions. He found
solace in the great outdoors, indulging in pursuits like hunting, fishing, golfing, and he was
known as a “rockhound,” collecting geodes. Riding his Harley Davidson motorcycles provided
him with a sense of freedom and adventure, while traveling through mountainous landscapes
offered moments of serenity and awe.
Guy was also a proud member of the Patriot Guard, considering it a privilege to honor veterans
and first responders through his participaton in their honor guards.
Guy was preceded in death by his parents, Clyde and Bernita, and his beloved son, Michael
Steven Shafer. He is survived by his devoted wife, Kathy C. Shafer, his son Guy H. Shafer (Mary),
his daughter Sherri L. Shafer, brother William Clyde Shafer, grandchildren Tyler, Suni, Kathleen,
Kenzie, Brayden, Sophia, and Benjamin, as well as eleven great-grandchildren – Matheus, Talon,
Adeline, Luciana, Cooper, Theodore, Guy, Kade, Olivia, Stetson, and Maxwell.
Guy Shafer will be remembered for his unwavering dedication to his family, his admirable work
ethic, and his zest for life. His legacy will continue to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing
him. Guy was deeply loved and cherished by all who knew him.
