Barbara Louise Alice (Herrman) was called home to the Lord on March 16, 2023 after losing her battle with cancer. She passed away peacefully at home with her husband at her side.

 

Barbara was born on March 27, 1950 in Benton Harbor, Michigan and attended schools in St. Joseph, Michigan. She played the saxophone in the St. Joseph High School Bears Marching Band.

 

She attended Michigan State University from 1968 to 1972 and earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Education. It was at Michigan State where she met her future husband John Christopher Alice. They dated throughout their college years and married on March 25, 1972 shortly after her graduation. They moved to Texas in 1974 when John went to work for Texas Instruments. 

 

Barbara was a 4th and 5th grade Math and Science teacher in a variety of private and public schools. She also took time off to be a full time mother to her two sons. She returned to teaching at an at-risk school that took a toll on her, prompting her to retire with her husband’s full support and blessing. She continued to fill in as a substitute teacher and eventually became a volunteer in the BEST (Building English Skills Together) program at Woodcreek Church until a rare form of cancer caused the loss of sight in her right eye.

 

Barbara loved to travel. She and John considered themselves blessed to have been able to travel to all seven continents and witnessed many of God’s great creations. Their 2022 trips were to Oberammergau Germany for the Passion Play and Danube River Cruise and a 3 week exploration cruise of Alaska from Vancouver all along the coast to Nome.

 

Her father (Lester Edward Herrman), her mother (Virginia Louise Herrman (Ross) and her younger sister (Carol Elizabeth Herrman) predeceased Barbara. She is survived by her brother (Lester Edward Herrman, Jr. and his wife Marilyn) and her husband (John Christopher Alice), sons (John Michael Alice and David Christopher Alice), her daughter in-laws (Danielle Jewell Alice (Huffman)) and Shawna Denise Alice (Cotton)) and her precious granddaughter (Isabella Marie Alice – David and Shawna’s daughter).

 

There will be a Celebration of Life on March 27, 2023 at Woodcreek Church at 10:00 am at 3400 E. Renner Rd., Richardson, TX 75082. In lieu of flowers, please give to the Cancer Research Institute in memory of Barbara (gift designation: Melanoma). https://www.cancerresearch.org
