Charles D. McKay Jr., a loving husband, father and grandfather, passed away peacefully at his home on Tuesday, August 4, 2020. A service will be held at The Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project https://www.woundedwarriorproject.org/donate
Charles was born in Navasota, Texas on October 8, 1939 to Charles Dean McKay and Goldie Gladine Chasteen. He was the eldest of three brothers. He spent his youth in Navasota playing football and he worked at the Tastee Freeze where he enjoyed hanging out with his buddies in their letter jackets shooting the breeze in the parking lot. He graduated from Navasota High School and he then served his country for three years in the Army.
He married Linda Ruth Stoneham on June 6, 1964 and they moved to Garland and had two children, Jill Lorraine and John Dean. Together they enjoyed yearly summer road trips exploring the US and cruising the Bahamas. Charles enjoyed reading cookbooks and watching cooking shows and then whipping up a new recipe in the kitchen and grilling meats to perfection. He had a great sense of humor with a sly smile and a ready laugh and he enjoyed chatting up strangers.
Professionally, he worked in the banking industry at Republic Bank in Dallas and Tarrant Bank in Fort Worth. He fully retired in 2005 and he loved holding his grandbabies and later taking them for a ride in his pickup truck.
Charles had a lot of names including Deanie Jr, Uncle Bubba, Charlie and best of all Daddy Mac. He was happiest when his family was happy and he loved being with his four grandchildren.
Preceded in death by his parents, Charles is survived by his loving wife Linda, and his two children and their families: Jill and Larry Granberry of Wylie, Texas and their children Emma and Ross; John and Michelle McKay of Murphy, Texas and their children Bennett and Campbell. He is also survived by his brothers John McKay and Paul McKay and nieces and nephews Mike and Chad and Amy, Adam and Megan.
As Charles would say, “Y’all be careful out there.”
