Donald J. Smith, age 87, passed away peacefully at home with his family by his side on January 17, 2019. Don was born January 16, 1932 in Indianapolis, Indiana, the second of three sons.
At the age of 16, he joined the army and was stationed in Japan during the Korean War. Upon discharge he returned to Indiana and enrolled at Indiana University in Bloomington. On February 21, 1960 he married Marjorie McGloon Smith. They were married for 55 years. Together they raised five children.
Don had a long career with JC Penney prior to opening his own firm. He continued to work most days until September 2018. Don was an avid golfer and a precise putter. His favorite hole was the 19th. He also enjoyed bowling, playing bridge, going to the movies and most of all spending time with his family.
His parish, St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, was very important to him. His family were Charter members of the church. He was instrumental in the formation of the SEAS Men’s Club. Over the years he held many positions of leadership including President, Treasurer and Chairman of various committees. He also served as an usher until December 2017.
He was known for his kind heart, easy smile and gregarious laugh. He truly never met a stranger.
Don was preceded in death by, his wife Margie, his son, Don, his brother, Charles Smith and his sister-in-law Norma Jean Smith. He is survived by his four children and their families, Adell and Silvo Lenart, their children, Maggie and Aran; Mary and Clay Peebles, their family, Rachael and Evan Nichols, their children Rylie and Henry, Alex and Courtney Peebles, their son, Patrick and Calvin Peebles; Kati and Falvey Malarcher; Tim and Maria Smith, their family, Anna and Patrick Durian, their son Colin and Allen Pendergrass. Don is also survived by his brother Robert Smith, and numerous nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday, January 24, at 10:30 am at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, 2700 West Spring Creek Parkway, Plano, Texas 75023. Mass will be preceded by a Rosary at 10:00 am.
