Merlin Charles Maag
September 20, 1934 -- June 06, 2019

Merlin Charles “Chuck” Maag was born 9/20/1934 in Baton Rouge, Louisiana and died 6/6/2019 at his home in Richardson, TX.

Chuck loved his family first. After that – in no particular order - he loved LSU Tigers football, a good steak, games and sports of all kinds, his church family, and New Orleans Jazz. He made friends very easily and was quick to laugh. He was eternally optimistic and always happy.

He served honorably in the USAF, enlisting at the age of 16. After basic training he was sent to Labrador, Canada where he came to know true cold for the first time – sled dogs were not common in New Orleans while he was growing up. His stint in the service and GI Bill allowed him to get his degree in Journalism at LSU where he met Doris Elaine Riley. They married in 1960.

Settling with his amazing wife and two perfect children in Richardson in 1972, he coached basketball, was an Indian Princess, packed lunches and made crossword puzzles. He bowled on the company team and played catcher for the softball team. He sang in the choir at the St Barnabas United Presbyterian Church. He was generous with time and talents to his many friends, his church, and his community; volunteering over 25,000 combined hours at the Dallas Arboretum, Network of Community Ministries, and the Richardson Senior Center.

Chuck was very social until the last few months of his life; for many years the Richardson Senior Center was his second home. He leaves behind the Friday pool tournament; dominos, bridge and cribbage games, 25 cent coffee, and a collection of true and loyal friends.

He is predeceased by his son Eric Charles Maag. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Doris, his daughter Celeste Walz and her husband Douglas, two grandchildren, and many, many people who benefited from his friendship and good works over the years.
